On 2 February, 18:00, the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Latvia invites to a film lecture by prof. Viktors Freibergs (University of Latvia) Nordic polyphony: narrative structure and collisions in Finnish cinema.
Frozen earth, cold and snow are metaphors frequently used in Finnish films to denote the feelings of seclusion. This motif is reinforced by a polyphonic narrative structure when a number of seemingly separate plot narratives gradually intertwine and lead to a collision. The final conflict, however, can be interpreted as an explosion of truth which reveals the true nature of the film characters. The lecture will contain fragments of the latest works by Mika and Aki Kaurismäki, Aku Louhimies and other Finnish film directors.
