The seminar "What is the role of the media in the construction of disability in Latvia in the context of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities?” will take place on February 20, 15:00 at the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Latvia premises, Marijas str. 13/3, Berg Bazar. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was ratified in Latvia on January 28, 2010, which allows analyzing how we reflect on people with disabilities in the media and how media affect and shape their daily lives. Baiba Baikovska, the PhD student at Riga Stradins University and the initiator of the seminar will present a study on media coverage of people with disabilities in Latvia from 28 January 2010 to 3 December 2019. Afterwards, the attendees will be invited to discuss the role of the media by increasing the awareness and understanding of disability issues and the diversity of persons with disabilities and their situations, how can media actively contribute to the effective and successful integration of persons with disabilities in all aspects of societal life. The seminar is hosted by Baiba Baikovska, PhD student at Riga Stradins University and supported by the Apeirons Organization of people with disabilities and their friends, Ombudsman of the Republic of Latvia, US Embassy in Latvia and the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Latvia.
