Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, most societies have struggled with how to handle the situation. Apart from the medical and virological aspects of the crisis, the dialogue in society has often been difficult and sometimes not very constructive, also between citizens and governments.
Finland has implemented a unique cooperation effort between the national government and various agents of civil society – so-called 'lockdown dialogues' - by coming together and building trust in the country’s ability to deal with the crisis. In Latvia, a trustful dialogue with citizens has at times been lacking and led to deepened divisions within society.
Although the pandemic is still not over, the time may have come to initiate a discussion on what happened to our societies during the last one-and-a-half year from a philosophical viewpoint and try to learn some lessons on better ways of crisis management and communication in the future.
