For the fifth year in a row, an international city-planning event MadCity Riga 2021 istaking place in Riga.  The main theme of MadCity 2021 is “Riga/Daugava 2026” and the event will take place from 29 to 30 September at Spīķeri concert hall. This year the focus is the Daugava waterfront and the long-term goal – to make the Daugava waterfront a place that is beloved by locals and also enjoyed by tourists, the most interesting promenade in Northern Europe.

The goal of the hackathon is to develop a practical action plan (spatial strategy of the small steps) for the next 5 years which establishes a link with major infrastructure projects that will affect the waterfront (construction of the Rail Baltica, reconstruction of the Vanšu tilts, construction of the Mūkusala promenade and East Highway and development of the Riga Central market), planned large-scale development projects in Zaķusala, Ķīpsala, Andrejsala, Zvirgzdu pussala and waterfront improvements that citizens and guests want to see. Such a constructive and understandable plan would help citizens to evaluate possible changes and benefits in the future, their opportunities to participate in the process.

The seminar will feature a presentation by Carl Mossfeldt about the city of Gothenburg - its pasts and way to climate neutrality, turning former shipyard area into science parks. Specific focus will be made on partnership and cooperation models. The Q&A session and discussion with the audience afterwards.
