Today on October 24, the second HROMADA (Nordic-Baltic knowledge-based input network to the rebuilding of Ukraine) conference “Strengthening Ukraine: Sharing knowledge for a sustainable future” is taking place in Riga.
With Helen Nilsson, Director of the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Lithuania, launching the conference with supportive uplifting introductory remarks, expert panel discussions have been taking place on the following topics:
1. Ukraine’s European integration: main challenges and mutual learning.
2. Ukrainian refugees in the Nordic and Baltic countries: strengthening Ukraine, changing our societies.
3. Mental health: how Nordic and Baltic countries can support Ukraine’s people.
4. Wartime education for Ukrainian children: challenges and best practices at home and abroad.
The event organised by the faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Latvia in cooperation with HROMADA is arranged with support from the Nordic Council of Ministers and in collaboration with NordForsk. The Council of Ministers views the continuation of the network positively for 2025 and 2026; however, the question of continued funding has not yet been formally finalised.
BACKGROUND
When Russia invaded Ukraine, the Council of Ministers decided to freeze all cooperation with Russia. Later that same year, it was decided to support the proposal to establish HROMADA, a network between Nordic and Baltic researchers and experts on Ukraine. The network also includes Ukrainian researchers and experts in the relevant fields. These individuals can act as bridge-builders in understanding Ukraine and in the future reconstruction and development of the country. Knowledge-based decisions are crucial, and the network can contribute significantly in this regard.
