The eighth Riga International Film Festival (RIGA IFF) will take place on 14-24 October this year with the slogan is “There is always time”. The festival programme will present more than 100 films and they will be shown in 10 thematic sections. Contemporary cinema meets the classic films, and assertive debut works mingle with festival hits in the RIGA IFF film programme. The programme recognises innovative cinema language and uniquely expressive filmmakers.
The opening of the Riga International Film Festival NORDIC HIGHLIGHTS programme will take place at Friday, 15 October with Anders Thomas Jensen's film RIDERS OF JUSTICE (Retfærdighedens ryttere, 2020). The film, which is the fifth collaboration between talented Danish writer-director and actor Mads Mikkelsen, is an intense revenge dramedy where tragedy is perceived and handled with characteristic Nordic dark humour. We can never be quite sure as to whether what we experience is a natural outcome, the fulfilment of a purpose, or an accident of the universe that springs from an all-encompassing chaos.
In the Nordic Highlights programme will reveal the Nordic mode of cinematic creation and storytelling – one that is very familiar to the people of the Baltics in terms of pace, vibrancy, mood, and, of course, humour. The north is much closer than we tend to think.
The selection of films has traditionally been developed in cooperation with the embassies of Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland, as well as the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Latvia and the Danish Cultural Institute in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
