On 16 February, the team of the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office visited Liepāja and met with the Gunārs Ansiņš, Mayor of Liepāja City, and the team responsible for activities under the European Capital of Culture 2027.
During her first visit to Liepāja, Director Nina Hvid Enevoldsen and Mayor of Liepāja City discussed several potential areas of cooperation and agreed on the date of the annual regional Nordic Days, this year held in Liepāja. The reason for celebrating Nordic Days in this city is twofold. Firstly, Liepāja has been a strong, close partner since the establishment of the office. Secondly, with a large share of Nordic companies operating in Liepāja region, we share a vision of sustainable development. Liepāja municipality’s rapid progress in renewable energy development aligns with one of our operational priorities for the next three-year period – strengthening energy security and energy independence.
This year, the annual Nordic Days will take place in autumn, with the highlight cultural event taking place on 3 November. Informational and cultural events are planned in close connection with the European Capital of Culture programme, reflecting the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office priorities in Latvia – particularly in promoting civic engagement, urban planning and building strong, resilient communities.
In 2027, Liepāja will share the European Capital of Culture title with Évora in Portugal, taking over from Trenčín in Slovakia and Oulu in Finland.
